More on Reading

We made a New Year's resolution for Inwe. It's more of a requirement, but she's not balking at all. The requirement is this: If she wants to watch evening TV or a movie she has to read a book first.

The books aren't difficult. We have The Ear Book, The Eye Book, and Hop On Pop by Dr. Seuss. The last one she doesn't have to read the whole book, just six pages at a time. There is a also a book we got from somewhere that asks the same question throughout, "Who is my mommy?" Anything with that kind of repetition is good for a beginning reader.

The reading lesson book is put on the shelf for now (64 out of 100 lessons completed successfully) as Inwe just tires of the lessons too easily. The attention span is just not there, eventhough I find the lessons to be really short and very doable. But, she's the four year old learning to read, not me, and I do not want to become the crazy, ranting, pushing mother here.

I bought a set of books today for Inwe to help with the reading a book a day requirement. These are the BOB Books. There are three sets: A, B, and C. I got the Level A, Set 1 box of 12 books. Each book is numbered so that you can have the child read the books in order, getting more sounds as you progress from book one to twelve. In this level of books he words are three letters long and all have the same phonetic sound. She read the first one with ease and enjoyed it. She had such a sense of accomplishment. About half an hour later, she asked to read more, so we did. We read books 2 and 3. We stopped there as Larien was playing with Inwe's hairbrush, and Inwe didn't want that to happen. I think we would have stopped even if that didn't get in the way.

These books are great for Inwe. I'm happy I spent the money on them. I don't think they would have worked as well without all of the work we did in the reading lessons book. Because of that book, Inwe is no stranger to the sounds and can immediately read or sound out the words with very little to no instruction from me. That's what she wants at this point: me to stay out of the teaching mode. If you look at the sidebar, I have put up the links to the entries regarding the reading.
