Momma

My daughters have decided to annoy me by calling me "Momma". The nice, sweet "Mommy" has flown out the window. I should not let them know that I do not like being called Momma, but I stiffen each time I hear them use that word.

See, Momma is not a good word. My mother hates being called Momma. My sister, Maverick, would call Mom that when she wanted to annoy my mother. It worked. It still does.

Momma, eww. Like Throw Momma from the Train, Big Momma's House, or that lovely phrase from my youth "Yo, Momma". Those aren't good. I even think Jeff Foxworthy might say, "If you call the woman who gave birth to you Momma, you might be a redneck."

Yes, I may be offending someone out there. Sorry. I do not want to be Momma. And, Mav, if you call me that next time I talk to you, get ready for a good walloping next time I see you. Posted by Picasa

I never thought of that. I call my mom: mommy. But when I'm writing on my blog I write mama, like that's what I want Isabelle to call me. But not like "Yo Momma" or the other Mommas you mentioned. When I hear it in my head I hear a sweet lilting Asian "mama" where the accent is different I guess.

Yes, I still do call my mother, Momma - it is just habit. She even signs cards, etc. that she sends me with "Momma." It is just something we have between us. And I promise, dear sweet, Sarabeth...to be prepared for my whoopin'!
