Yesterday was Monday--no school for Inwe, and as Larien is always with me all three of us went to my OB appointment. This was a routine check for my pregnancy. I had told Inwe what to expect: the blood pressure, the urine sample, and listening to the heart beat.
While in the waiting room Larien went directly to the water cooler. Inwe, in a reversal of roles, ended up following her sister to the cooler. Larien has accompanied me to the OB before and is well acquainted with getting a cup, pushing the button, and getting water. Inwe found this delightful and joined in with zeal. Luckily the wait was quite short so the water cooler wasn't emptied!
As I sat on the exam table with Larien in my arms, the nurse took my blood pressure. Larien pointed at the stethoscope and said, 'doctor'. She's familiar with the tools of the trade as my cousins gave the girls a doctor set for Christmas. It has been a toy in high demand since then. Inwe was engrossed in a book.
Next was the urine sample. Inwe didn't seem interested in moving to the restroom, so I asked her if she wanted to stay. "Oh no, Mommy, I want to see you pee in the cup." Both girls watched with great interest.
Lastly the doctor was ready to listen to the heartbeat. Larien, of course, had to be right next to me on the exam table. Inwe piped up, "I want to be near you, too." The doctor placed two chairs next to the table so Inwe had plenty of room to stand. Dr. Redick asked Inwe to help her by squirting the conductive gel onto the Doppler probe. Inwe squeezed away and held my hand as the doctor moved the probe over my abdomen to find the heartbeat of the baby. She found mine first. "That's mine, Inwe. Do you hear the whoosh whoosh?" She nodded, too excited to say anything. A few seconds later we heard the faster whoosh of the baby's heartbeat. "I hear it, Mommy! I hear it! Do you hear it, Larien?"
