Trip to Williamsburg, Virginia

We took the girls on a trip to Williamsburg, VA this weekend. Phill took Friday off, we booked a 2 bedroom hotel suite, and got three day passes for all of us to Busch Gardens and Water Country USA. Did we attempt to see any of Colonial Williamsburg? No. We'll tackle that trip when they are older. The purpose of this trip was to get away before BWAN is born and to introduce the girls to rides and waterslides.

So, how did it go? Good. Pretty darn great, actually. Inwe did have a cold as we left on Friday, and by late Saturday night Larien and Phill had it. I woke up with it this morning. Still, with all that sniffling, sore throats, and fever, we had a good time and went to the parks all three days.

Friday we went to Water Country USA, a 50's-60's themed water park. There is a little kid area and other attractions just made for the pint sized visitor. Here we took no pictures as both of us were engaged with the girls. Inwe was the most adventurous one going down every water slide in the Kritter Korral, even one that required her to climb a jungle netting ladder and completely submerged her at the end. Larien did most of the little slides, such as the pelican, whale, frog, and shark. The next part of the park we visited was Cow-a-bunga, where Phill and Inwe went down a larger water slide together as Larien and I splashed in the water and played in a boat. The desperate need for naps called us to the hotel room a bit after 3pm. Around 6:30pm we headed to Busch Gardens.

Busch Gardens Virginia is divided into countries, and I had long scouted out that Germany had tot rides, some that could be ridden with parents and others that could be ridden by just the little ones. The first excitement came when we rode the train. Both the girls like the Thomas the Very Useful Engine stories, and that's what they thought they were riding. This picture doesn't show the excitement on Larien's face, but the train hadn't moved yet.

DragonLand, as Inwe called the place, was a great success. The girls flew dragons, rode lady bugs, boats, carousels, and a mini ferris wheel. Some of these pictures really show the excitement both of them felt. The kiddie part of the park closes at 9pm, so we took a gondola ride back to England, which is the park's entrance. Both girls loved the gondola ride. I think I was the only one with any kind of anxiety about being taken in the dark (and I was backwards) over other roller coasters and attractions. By the time we got to the car, it was close to 10pm and time for our little ones to sleep. Did they sleep late on Saturday? No--6:30am, ready to go back to Busch Gardens and ride more rides.

By the time we breakfasted with all the other tourists at one of the many waffle/pancake places, it was time to go back to the park. Neither girl wanted to trifle with the slow train to Germany; instead they both wanted to take the gondola to Dragon Land. This gondola took us to France first, where we sighted the Le Mans motor speedway, which we came back to later in the day. After correctly stating the capitol of Poland, the gondola guys allowed us to go on to Germany where we did much of the same as on Friday evening. Here are some more photos of us on the carousel and the lady bugs. We saw a trained dog, cat, bird show at Jack Hanna's place in the park; drove the cars at Le Mans; and headed out to the hotel for nap. The plan was to spend the morning at Busch Gardens, nap in the early afternoon, and then return to the water park. The parents did not consult the children on this plan, hence it was nixed after a very crowded dinner in which we discovered that Larien was feeling badly. Did we take the girls to the park? Yes. We figured we could at least eke out a merry go round ride out of Larien, and Inwe was up to anything at this point. We found more kid friendly rides, including some bumper cars for Inwe and swings for Larien. Despite my left arm feeling completely distressed from carrying Larien so much, we had a good time and the girls lasted until the park closed at 10pm.

Sunday was rainy, short day at Busch Gardens, but both girls were good enough that we will take them anywhere.
