"I'm so glad we got a king size bed" moment: Of course on the weekend that Phill is away, the girls and I get sick. All three of us have been wiping our noses, using copious amounts of tissues, and putting petroleum jelly and Mary Kay Intense Mositurizing Cream under our noses.
Friday evening the girls went to bed just fine. Larien at 9pm; Inwe at 10pm (she had napped really late that afternoon). I did attempt to get Inwe in bed at 9pm, but she couldn't sleep. It was bribing her with sleeping in my bed that finally got her to close her eyes. I, not being that tired, got into bed around 11:30pm. That was mistake #1.
Larien began making noises at 12:30am. Being the patient, won't run at the first noise kind of mother that I am, waited until she was really awake at 1pm to go to her. I tried rocking her to sleep (thank you Mom Mom). I had her perfectly asleep. Her arm dropped limply. Alas, I was fooled. As soon as I laid her down she popped back awake and began to wail. Chalk up mistake #2 for not recognizing the signs of an earache: sitting up in mommy's arms is okay; laying down so there is pressure on the ear drum is not okay. But, I was in zombie mode and not thinking. Be kind.
I attempted to calm her by bringing her into my bed. Inwe is sleeping soundly at least. Larien seemed to like being propped up on the pillows. The little sweetie kept saying, "Mama, pillow." After a while--an hour--that doesn't seem so sweet. Even Ursa, our 7 month old puppy had had enough. She went downstairs and slept on the couch. That was when the thought entered my head that Larien needed pain relief. She knew it too. She sucked down some Tylenol and half an hour later was soundly sleeping next to me. That was at 3:30am. I actually heard a sigh of relief from Inwe on her side of the king size bed.
At 4:30am, Larien woke up very, very happy. Mommy was not happy. I did learn that Larien can follow directions well. When I told her to lay down, she did it promptly. Mistake #3 was talking to her at all. Inwe woke up, the puppy needed to go outside, and Larien began asking for milk. After Ursa relieved herself and chased a bunny, and Larien had some milk we finally got back to sleep at 5am. Larien made noise at 6am, but I snuggled her closer and got another hour of sleep from her. Poor Inwe looked at me and said, "Mommy, I didn't get much sleep. Can I stay in bed?" How I wished I was her.
My lessons for this weekend were:
- Go to bed early when the husband is out of town. You never know when you may get 4 hours of sleep.
- When Larien wakes up in the middle of the night, give her pain reliever. That's why she's awake.
- When you are sleeping with your little girls, don't talk to them when they wake up. A potty training book has that in it, but I had forgotten it.
- If you plan on having more than one kid, get a king size bed. You'll need it. I do keep wondering about how much space I'm going to have when the third kid comes along. As of now with two little girls in the bed I get about 16 inches of space. I'm not sure I can sleep on less. Maybe I should have thought about that earlier. Do manufacturers make a continent sized bed?
